Compost
Compost is the single best amendment for tight Gulf Coast clay. Worked in, it opens up the soil so water drains instead of ponding; spread thin over turf, it feeds the lawn and softens compaction from mowers and foot traffic.
What it is used for
- Amending clay before planting shrubs or turf
- Top-dressing lawns in spring and early fall
- Building vegetable beds alongside garden mix
- Reviving beds that drain poorly after storms
Depth & coverage
Recommended depth
Work 2 to 3 inches into the top 6 inches of soil, or top-dress lawns at 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
Coverage
One cubic yard covers about 650 square feet at 1/2 inch deep.
Installation tips
- 1Top-dress turf right after aeration so the compost drops into the holes.
- 2Do not plant directly into straight compost. Blend it with existing soil or garden mix.
- 3Two thin applications a year beat one heavy one.
