Fill Dirt
Fill dirt is clean, unscreened soil used for bulk volume. It is not planting soil — it goes underneath. Use it to bring low areas up to grade, backfill around structures, or build the rough shape of a yard before topsoil goes on top.
What it is used for
- Filling low spots that hold water after rain
- Rough grading before topsoil and sod
- Backfilling around retaining walls and pads
- Building up berms and elevation changes

Recommended depth
Place in 6-inch lifts and compact each lift before adding the next.
Coverage
One cubic yard covers about 54 square feet at 6 inches deep.
Installation tips
- 1Always cap fill dirt with 3 to 4 inches of topsoil before planting anything.
- 2Compacting in lifts prevents the settling and sinkholes that show up a year later.
- 3Grade away from the house at roughly 6 inches of fall over the first 10 feet.
