Sand

Fine / Masonry Sand

Masonry sand is finely screened and uniform, which is exactly what mortar and paver bedding need. The consistent grain lets you screed a dead-flat setting bed and gives mortar a smooth, workable body.

What it is used for

  • Mortar for brick, block, and stone work
  • 1-inch screed bed under pavers and flagstone
  • Sandboxes and smooth play surfaces
  • Filling joints between flagstone

Depth & coverage

Recommended depth

1 inch screeded bedding layer under pavers.

Coverage

One cubic yard covers about 320 square feet at 1 inch deep.

Installation tips

  1. 1Screed the bedding layer — do not tamp it before setting pavers.
  2. 2Keep the bedding layer a consistent 1 inch. Thicker beds rut under traffic.
  3. 3Run compacted base underneath. Masonry sand is a bedding layer, never a base.
