Sand

Torpedo Sand

Torpedo sand is a coarse, washed sand with angular grains. The larger particle size makes it the sand of choice for mixing concrete and for drainage layers where finer sand would pack tight and hold water.

What it is used for

  • Mixing concrete and mortar on site
  • Drainage layers under gravel or stone
  • French drain bedding
  • Base under heavy paver traffic

Depth & coverage

Recommended depth

2 to 4 inches as a drainage layer; mix by ratio for concrete.

Coverage

One cubic yard covers about 160 square feet at 2 inches deep.

Installation tips

  1. 1Use torpedo, not fine sand, anywhere water needs to move through.
  2. 2For concrete, keep the sand covered so its moisture content stays consistent between batches.
  3. 3Pair with washed stone for a drainage trench that will not silt up.
