Crushed & Base

Concrete Stone

Concrete stone is washed, angular rock with the fines removed. Because there are no fines to clog the voids, water moves straight through it, which is why it is the go-to rock for French drains, drain fields, and utility bedding.

What it is used for

  • French drains and drainage trenches
  • Pipe bedding for utility runs
  • Mixing structural concrete
  • Dry wells and infiltration pits

Depth & coverage

Recommended depth

Bed pipe on 4 inches and cover with at least 6 inches of stone.

Coverage

One cubic yard covers about 81 square feet at 4 inches deep.

Installation tips

  1. 1Wrap drainage trenches in filter fabric so surrounding soil cannot silt up the voids.
  2. 2Do not use base rock with fines where the job calls for washed stone. The fines defeat the drainage.
  3. 3Slope drain lines at least 1 percent toward the outlet.
